Madagascar lead African charge

The Plate and Bowl competitions showed just how competitive African rugby is becoming, with Madagascar the pick of the emerging nations from a continent developing an ever greater taste for the sport under the guidance of CAR.

The Malagasy recorded notable victories over Seychelles, Uganda, Swaziland and eventual Cup finalists Western Province (14-12), while only losing out against eventual Cup victors Samoa by the same small margin.

Michael Collinson, President and coach of the Swazi Rugby Union, who eventually lost out to Botswana for the Bowl silverware, was effusive in his praise.

"Madagascar look like being the next big rugby story to come out of Africa. They played fantastically well here and deserve every success they get," he said.
