Monica Puig to be Puerto Rico’s flag-bearer at Tokyo 2020

Monica Puig, who rose to fame by winning the gold medal at Rio Olympics, has been named Puerto Rico’s flag-bearer for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
This doesn’t come as a surprise, given that the 22-year-old tennis star landed her country’s first-ever gold medal at the quadrennial event after upsetting some of the biggest names in the circuit en route the women’s singles triumph in Rio de Janerio.
“They have approached me to be flag-bearer,” Puig told Reuters. “They’ve already asked me about the possibility of doing it in 2020 and there’s no way I could say no.”
Meanwhile, the World No. 35 will look to extend her dream run at the prestigious US Open that begins Monday.
Seeded 32nd in the main draw, Puig has been drawn to cross the swords with China’s Saisai Zheng in the first round.
